Hornung was born in Middlesbrough, England.

The portrait, the only known likeness in paint of Hornung, the creator of Raffles the - Gentleman Thief, is now in the collection of the Dorman Museum in Middlesbrough. It was bought from Bonhams with financial help from the V and A and The Art Fund and helped by Peter Nahum who bid at auction for the museum with no fee.
