Perhaps the ‘modello’ or preparatory sketch, for a larger painting (in the Prado, Madrid). The distortions in El Greco’s paintings, once believed to be the result of astigmatism in his eyes, now are recognized as carefully planned, like his colour harmonies, to produce a specific emotional effect.
