Painted in Veere (Holland) in 1906, where Van Rysselberghe executed several works that year. The first owner of the present work was the wife of Albert Plasschaert, the Dutch writer and art critic. Plasschaert may have been organising an exhibition of Van Rhysselberghe's work in Veere at the time when this painting was given to his wife.
