Cast in 1899. Saint-Gaudens was commissioned to produce a full-scale bronze monument for the town of Springfield in Massachusetts. Circa 1894 the sculptor made several casts in reduced size with varying modifications and from 1898 casts were being produced in Paris. Today about 25 casts exist in various locations.
