Samuel H Kress Collection 1952. Lodovico was the eldest of the Carracci family that inaugurated the baroque style in Bologna. This canvas, once owned by the French Royal Family, with its flowing composition and twilight colour schemes ranks among Ludovico’s finest works. The figure of the sleeping saint is based on an ancient Roman statue.
