To this day, West Milford remains a rural mountain town, and due to the ambiguous nature of this work, pinpointing the exact location is difficult. Currently, the painting is on display at the Brooklyn Museum in New York City. The bottom right corner is inscribed "Bareford Mountains, New Jersey, J.F. Cropsey, 1850".
